John Foley, S.J.

John Foley says he started learning to compose at the age of five. His mother called him to the piano and said, "You know, you can make up your own songs. Watch." The rest is history. John has masters' degrees in Philosophy and Fundamental Theology, and a doctorate in Liturgical Theology from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. In addition to piano studies since childhood, John Foley studied composition at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto under Samuel Dolin; with Reginald Smith Brindle in London; and with Dominick Argento and Paul Fetler in Minneapolis. John began writing liturgical music in 1972. In total, he has published 60 pieces in the seven liturgical collections of the St. Louis Jesuits, and over 40 diverse titles since then. He is also a composer of classical music. His pieces have been played by the Louisville Orchestra, Chicago Symphony and Chicago Lyric Orchestra, and featured on National Public Radio. In 1993, John became director of the Center for Liturgy at Saint Louis University, a national think tank for studying and teaching the liturgy. He lectures across the country on liturgy, liturgical music and the spirituality of liturgy.

OCP_11159.jpg Like Winter Waiting - CD
$16.95
Like Winter Waiting is a thought-provoking musical play that tells the Advent story with humor, poignancy and joy. It celebrates the anticipation of Christmas the way an expectant mother joyously awaits the birth of her child—the waiting is a sacred time of reflection, preparation and hope. Present the play as a choral concert with some spoken parts, or as a complete musical play with characters, costumes, a minimal set and even dance. The choral arrangements are accessible to most parishes and can be conveniently rehearsed using the cassette or CD with voice lead-ins. The audience participates by singing the recurring theme song printed in the assembly edition. Contents: Annunciations; The Heart Of The World; Like Winter Waiting; Oh, The Times; O Mary, Tell Us; The Promise Of The Lord; Soon The Beginning; Stars; Summer Of Flowers; Unless You Lead Me On; We Have Searched; Who Is This Woman.

$16.95
"Give an ear to me, O Lord. Answer, when I call." For over 30 years, Catholics have been enthusiastically giving their ears — and voices — to the music of John Foley. At Advent, they have sung "Patience, People," from Gentle Night, one of many collections John recorded with the St. Louis Jesuits. They have sung "I Rejoiced," from Wood Hath Hope, as a gathering song. One Bread, One Body, Vol. 2, is a retrospective of John’s very best liturgical music, drawn from these and other beloved collections such as Lord Of Light, A Dwelling Place, Earthen Vessels and The Steadfast Love.

The second volume offers the same variety of inspiring songs as the first; some in simple arrangements for solo voice and guitar or piano, while others employ a full choir, organ and trumpets. The 16 familiar titles, newly re-mastered and some newly recorded, reflect the great impact of John’s music on the Church.

Contents

A Song of Hope; Answer, When I Call; Awake, Arise; Come Weal, Come Woe; Dwelling Place; Glory to God; I Rejoiced; If God Is for Us; Only in God; Patience, People; Psalm 16: Keep Me Safe, O God; Psalm 30: If You, O God; Take, Lord, Receive; Turn to Me; Who Are We, O Lord; Winter, Cold Night
