John Foley, S.J. |
| John Foley says he started learning to compose at the age of five. His mother called him to the piano and said, "You know, you can make up your own songs. Watch." The rest is history. John has masters' degrees in Philosophy and Fundamental Theology, and a doctorate in Liturgical Theology from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. In addition to piano studies since childhood, John Foley studied composition at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto under Samuel Dolin; with Reginald Smith Brindle in London; and with Dominick Argento and Paul Fetler in Minneapolis. John began writing liturgical music in 1972. In total, he has published 60 pieces in the seven liturgical collections of the St. Louis Jesuits, and over 40 diverse titles since then. He is also a composer of classical music. His pieces have been played by the Louisville Orchestra, Chicago Symphony and Chicago Lyric Orchestra, and featured on National Public Radio. In 1993, John became director of the Center for Liturgy at Saint Louis University, a national think tank for studying and teaching the liturgy. He lectures across the country on liturgy, liturgical music and the spirituality of liturgy. |
