A perfect complement to the new movie, The Passion of The Christ, this book presents reflections that will enable the reader to focus deeply on the true meaning of the Passion. In his famous spiritual classic, The Imitation of Christ, Thomas à Kempis reminds the reader that in order to become a follower of Christ one must imitate his life, and to accomplish this he adds: “Let it then be our main concern to meditate on the life of Jesus Christ. It is impossible to imitate Christ without first knowing him, and the best way of getting to know him is by meditating on his life as it is described in the four Gospels.”
Thus, in this wonderful meditation book, perfect for Lent, or any time of the year, the great spiritual writer and monk gives profound, short reflections on Gospel passages about the passion and death of Christ. Each chapter, focusing on a specific aspect of the Passion of Our Lord, gives a prayer, a meditation and spiritual advice and closes with another short prayer. This book covers the entire Passion, and makes great spiritual reading for anyone. Illustrated. 168 pages, Paperback. Ignatius Press February 2004 Quantity
Lent: An Uncommon Love Story is Antoinette Bosco’s insightful, often poignant reflection on the season of Lent – a season of the Church year that is mirrored by seasons in our lives. Who of us has not known losses and disappointments? Deep hurts that do not go away? And why does it have to be this way?
“I have come to see Lent as the mosaic of what life is about. It is given to us as a gift to take an incredible journey of some forty days where we can gain moments of real insight, unlocking the mysteries of why life is as it is. In Lent we are given the freedom to ask questions and cry out our confusions, trusting that God understands.” Paperback, 111 pages. Pauline Books & Media Winter 2005.
Many today fear that we hover on the brink of global collapse. War, terrorism, poverty and disease provoke a sense of despair. Yet in our midst stands Jesus Christ, undaunted by the brutal realities of a world that rejects him. And as he looks at each of us, he asks directly and personally, "Will you have faith in me?"
In this powerful book Fr. Acklin reveals the passionate love of God for every person, love that will not be denied or defeated. God is for us in spite of our indifference. God has not been eclipsed by the world's agenda. God will never abandon us. God will always seek out the wounded and lost. We have his guarantee that this is so because the suffering and death—the passion—of Jesus clinched the deal confirming God's commitment to his creation.
The Passion of the Lamb helps us answer the only question that ultimately matters: Will we have faith in Jesus? Spring 2006
Cardinal Christoph Schönborn
In this series of retreat meditations preached to Pope John Paul II and the papal household during a Lenten retreat, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn uses the Catechism of the Catholic Church (of which he was the general editor) and Sacred Scripture to lead us to a deeper union with Christ by helping us to understand and love the Church, His bride. To love the Church, which the Catechism calls "a living communion with Jesus Christ", we must see her with the eyes of Jesus, who "loved the Church and gave Himself up for her."
As he draws us into a deeper understanding of the Church, who she is and where the deepest wellsprings of her being lie are the theme of his meditations. He also illustrates many points by using the thoughts of the new doctor of the Church, St. Thérèse of Lisieux. She found her vocation to be "love in the heart of the Church" and can offer us a renewed and vital vision of the Church.
"It is an awesome task to preach a retreat in the presence of the Pope. Cardinal Schönborn does it successfully by presenting the methods of St. Ignatius Loyola's famous retreat in a fresh way using the new Catechism, the Bible, and St. Thérèse of Lisieux."
